Dia De Los Muertos Makeup & Costume

DSC_0393Hello everyone!

This is the second Halloween look that I’m going to do this season. It’s a costume that is inspired by the Mexican holiday Day of the Dead. Traditionally it’s a day of remembrance for family and friends who have passed on. Just as a disclaimer, I want to say that this is not done in disrespect of this tradition or culture.

I wore makeup similar to this last year for Halloween so I know I won’t be recreating it on Halloween this year, but I did want to do a blog post on it in case anyone was still looking for some last minute costume inspiration!DSC_0418

The makeup can be modified to be as simple or as intricate as you want it to be. I went for a very simple design, and you can wear it with any outfit that’s dark, lacey, or has a Gothic feel to it.

Oh, also I made the headband using flowers, a cheap headband, and some black spray paint! I think adding the headpiece totally brings the look together!DSC_0402

You’ll need:

  • White cream makeup for the face.DSC_0430
  • Black eyeshadow for the hollows of the eyes and cheeks.
  • Black, red, and green cream makeup or eye liners for the decorations.

Here’s a tip: don’t use the white cream makeup on the hollows of your eyes where the black cream makeup and black shadow will go. There was too much white makeup underneath the black paint, and mine came out looking more gray than black.DSC_0401

That’s all for this post! I like this look because it’s spooky but not gory, I know a lot of people aren’t big on bloody costumes. It’s also super easy to put together without being cheesy and overdone like the standard cat costume lol.

  1. OMG, this is fantastic! I saw you on StashMatters and so I thought I’d pop in and give you a follow. I’m a HUGE HUGE HUGE Dia De Los Muertos collector. Like sick huge, like makeup sick. And I love your look. What I love that you did different than a lot of other people are doing is the roses in the hair. That really makes it. And you have the perfect top. I just wanted to say it’s awesome!! Where did you get the white cream makeup? And did you just use regular black shadow?

    • Thanks darling!!!! I really appreciate your kind feedback! I’m glad you found my blog and this post!
I know what you mean I have so many pins on Pinterest of these looks. I love how you can individualize them!
I ordered my white cream makeup from Amazon it was from a brand called Mehron. For the black I used a combo of a matte black eye shadow and a black cream makeup from a bruise wheel that I also got from Mehron. I mainly used the shadow to darken and the cream makeup for the bulk of the work.
Thanks again for following and commenting!!!
