Chocolate Acia Bowl Recipe & Chia Seed/Acai Breakdown

DSC_0648A healthy chocolate dish for breakfast! Sounds like a trick right? Well it’s not this chocolate acai recipe is healthy fuel that is a treat to start your day with.

Two years ago I had no idea what chia seeds were or acai so for all of you who don’t know the rundownΒ  I’ve added a breakdown of what they are and why they are good for you!

1 frozen banana

About 8 frozen acai cubes or one frozen packet

3 tablespoons cocoa powder

2 tablespoons agave nectar

3/4 cup almond milk

1 tablespoon chia seeds (soaked in 2 tablespoons of water)

1/2 fresh banana

1 handful of rasberries

1 handful of granola

Add all of the ingredients to your blender except the almond milk. Before you start blending add 1/2 of the almond milk and blend. Add the other half and blend until smooth. Adding your liquids slowly and not over blending it will conserve the thickness.

DSC_0663So what is acai?

An acai berry is the fruit of the acai palm, a tree native to Brazil. It’s fruit is in high demand due its health benefits. Acai is a super-fruit jam packed withΒ  fiber, vitiman C, vitamin A, calcium, amino acids, and it’s low in sugar.

The form that is most common is the pulp being separated from the berry. You can buy it in freeze dried packets or you do as I did and buy the fresh juice and pour it into ice cube trays to make your own frozen acai. This method is much cheaper.

What is a chia seed?

DSC_0644Chia seeds come from a dessert plant grown in Mexico. The seeds are very nutritional and used as an additive to a healthy diet much like flaxseeds or sunflower seeds.

They are high in omega 3 fatty acids and fiber. When mixed with water they absorb 2 times they’re weight and the texture transforms from crunchy seeds into a gelatinous consistency.

    • Yep you can even find chia seeds in Walmart!!! You can also find acai in the refrigerated juice section and freeze it yourself in ice cube trays, its a lot cheaper than buying the freezer packs at Whole Foods!
