Tech Talk: Duolingo

I’m not the sort to download every new hot app that hits the market. As far as phone downloads go I keep it pretty basic. However, for the past few days I have been really loving the app Duolingo. It allows you to practice or build skills on another language. Being bilingual has unlimited benefits and this presents a super easy and convenient way to learn the basics of a second language.

Screenshot_2014-06-08-15-33-35I took a few french classes in high school and although that was years ago I still remember the basics and have always wished that I took it further. Using the app I can practice the skills that I have retained in my memory. I’ve also learned quite a bit in the time that I’ve been using Duolingo.

The app works by teaching you new words using visual associations as well as definitions. Once you know the words you begin working them into sentences. You are moved up to new levels by answering questions correctly and speaking sentences with the correct inflections into the microphone on your phone. It has a great balance of vocabulary and teaching you proper sentence structure.

I haven’t ventured out into languages that I’m completely new to so I can’t say that how it would work out learning a language from scratch using the app but I give it a four out five stars for practicing a language that you already have some base knowledge of. Oh and did I mention its free, and far better than downloading mindless games from your app store.

  1. Hey there this is kinda of off topic but I was
wanting to know if blogs use WYSIWYG editors or if
you have to manually code with HTML. I’m starting a
blog soon but have no coding skills so I wanted to get guidance from someone with experience.
Any help would be enormously appreciated!

    • No problem! You really don’t need to have any coding experience at all to have a successful blog when you first start out. Though it wouldn’t hurt you, WordPress templates pretty much lay out how to upload, customize, and maintain your blog using terms that are simple to understand. When I first started out I knew nothing about coding and just kind of learned here and there along the way.
It seems kind of daunting but I would just suggest making a page and uploading a post just to test it out. Hope that helped!
