Don’t Diss the DJ

Now I know it’s no secret, but in the spirit of full disclosure I’m just going to come right out and say it. I love electronic music. If you’ve read any of my blog posts you’re probably not surprised by this. Now that I’ve gotten that out of the way, I can get on to the major point of this rant. I’m hear to tell you that mix artists/dj’s are artists. They are talented, and they have the ability to produce amazing works of art.

Lately, so many people around me have been complaining about the “noise”that they hear on the radio and the people who in their opinion possess no talent of their own and are capitalizing off of the talent of “real artists.” Its become cool for people of my generation to say that they “only listen to oldies” and “would never dare listen to a modern musical artist.” The justification for being closed off and ignorant to fresh new works is that the people making music now have no talent and that they don’t do anything that any random fool off of the street couldn’t learn how to do in five minutes.

What I want to say to these people is WAKE UP! Just because something is old it doesn’t mean that its better. Many people here electronic music and just say “oh, well I could do that.” It takes more than just pushing a few buttons to make an electronic song. Unless you’re a prodigy there’s no way that you will be able to mix a quality, complex song at the drop of a hat. The production of all music takes passion and creativity.

Music has always been about the art of reusing and remixing. The difference is that electronic artists don’t hide it. As humans we build on top of what we know, inspiration and reuse is not thievery. I’m not saying that people who aren’t electronic artists aren’t talented. The point that I’m trying to make is that producing music takes talent, no matter what genre it is. The majority of people that I know who say that they “hate electronic” really mean that they hate chart music. The only artists that they know from these genres are chart artists like Avicii and Calvin Harris, and write off a whole genre of music just because they think that what is on the radio is all that’s out there and because they think that its cool to hate on other people.

If being ignorant is cool, then I guess I’m pretty lame.
